The Oppressiveness of Fear

9 July 2009 No Comment

The oppressiveness of the fog reminds me of the oppressiveness of fear.  When we are in fear, we cannot see beyond our thoughts and emotions.  We lose the ability to cast our eyes on the horizon where all hope lies.  When we find ourselves engulfed in the fog of fear, we may not be able to see the Promised Land, but we know it is there.  We know this because we have been here before.  We have lost a job and found a better one.  We have lost a loved one and learned to breathe again.  We have elected presidents we feared would bring destruction to find we made it through to a new election where our hope was restored. We have run the marathon, delivered the baby, asked for the raise, made the presentation, asked the person out, survived the first date, climbed the mountain, passed the test and confronted our spouse and most importantly, we survived.  In this life there is one thing we do know.  The sun will rise again.  The fog will lift, the storm will pass and the things we fear today will seem frivolous tomorrow if we do not allow them to stifle us in the process.

Fog is a quirky thing.  It seems to settle in a place, decide it is comfortable and stick around for a while.  Sounds familiar doesn’t it?  Fog like fear blinds us to all truth.  It plays with our minds and causes us to see things as they really are not. Have you ever tried to drive in a thick fog?  Everything looks different.  The roads you have driven for years now appear unknown.  You miss the turn at the stop sign.  You cannot remember where the bend in the road is up ahead and even forget there is one there.  What you thought you knew about this road you are on has vanished as you allow the fog to control you instead of trusting the knowledge within you.  When we allow fear to permeate our minds, we are inviting the dense fog into our thoughts and emotions.  We suddenly find we cannot see the horizon.  We are blinded to all that we knew to be true.  The difference between fear and fog though is that we have the ability to choose when to lift fear from our lives.  We are not controlled by weather patterns in our minds.   We have the ability to take captive the thoughts that bring fear and to replace them with thoughts that bring life.

Escape the fog today.  Your destiny is waiting!
